What’s on The Capitol Heights’ playlist? September Edition
Here’s a smattering of what we’re listening to this month. We also reserve a special spot for a local track. The theme of this month is nostalgia and some of the songs that takes us way back when…
- Unsung Zeros – Louder than Words
This song was discovered in the early 00’s (the aughties?) while we were in high school. We like the melody and changing dynamics of the song. - The New Amsterdams – Hanging on for Hope
Also discovered in high school, this song features great lyrics and a nice organ (which makes it Counting Crows-esque =]). - Hot Hot Heat – Middle of Nowhere
Our high school era playlist continues with an upbeat song by Hot Hot Heat. A great modal chord progression, melody, and a cool guitar solo are the highlights of this tune. - Motion City Soundtrack – Everything is Alright
This song serves as a reminder to not get caught up on the small things and be happy. - Brand New – The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot
We slow the playlist down here with a great song by Brand New. The last song from high school is one highlighting our teenage angst. - Hozier – From Eden
This Irish artist speak to my soul. His November 4th show is sold out with tickets selling for $500! Is this song in 5/8 or 5/4? - The Civil Wars – I Had Me A Girl
Although they recently broke up, this song is still exceptional. A little bit of a venture into Americana. - La Dispute – New Storms For Older Lovers
We found this song via an old band Kenny was in. The lyrics are amazing in this song. We’ve had internal disagreements about which party is talking in this song – the main guy, the cheater, the wife, or the narrator. The vocalist mostly screams in this song so take a moment to read the lyrics if that turns you off. Don’t let the hardcore facade fool you either as the rest of the band more than pulls their weight. The harmonized guitar riff in the middle is entrancing. - Go Radio – Goodnight Moon
This band’s lead is the other singer from Mayday Parade’s awesome CD A Lesson in Romantics. Once he left that band, this song was the demo for Go Radio – and it’s a lovely ballad. - A Perfect Circle – Judith
I actually didn’t discover this song until college and just kinda fell in love with the rage. - Keaton Henson – You
Our friend Amanda sent us this song via Spotify and it’s amazing. People are calling this guy the British Jeff Buckley. He apparently suffers from crippling stage fright, but as long as he can keep recording music I’ll keep listening. There’s so much bass in this song. Make sure you play it on a system that can handle its majesty.

3PM – Slow Me Down
We’ve seen these guys on twitter a LOT lately and we really enjoy how happy and fun they sound! Here’s a video of the song.
We’ve provided a Spotify embed here for your listening pleasure. We couldn’t find 3PM on Spotify : (
*Update* We found 3PM on Spotify! They are now added to the playlist.
